// The 1975 in New Orleans //
This past Sunday I saw The 1975 at a sold-out show at the New Orleans House of Blues. They are one of my current favorite bands, so I was REALLY stoked about it.
The 1975 are a Manchester, England-based band whose music I would describe as indie synth-pop (?). I don’t know if that’s an actual genre, but I’m gonna go with it. The four-man group has gotten bigger here in the US recently, with the help of their first US radio single, “Chocolate”. However, my personal favorites are “Girls,” “Menswear,” “Settle Down,” “Antichrist,” and basically every single other one. They’ve been playing extensively around the US this year. They’ve even played some big festivals, such as Coachella and Hangout Festival.
What I love about this group is their versatility of songs. Tracks such as “Girls” and “She Way Out” have an almost Michael Jackson-esque undertone to them. “Menswear,” and “M.O.N.E.Y” are a bit more electronic-synthy. And tracks like “Robbers” and “Antichrist” are more alternative rock.
I was really pumped about finally seeing them live after listening to their self-titled album abouttttt… 87 times? I went with some good friends who had seen them live before and raved about them. And let me tell you, they definitely did not disappoint. Lead singer Matty Healy was such a great performer, and definitely knew how to work the stage and the crowd. He even climbed up the walls on the side of the stage at the House of Blues and ended up climbing over the balcony on two separate occasions. He delivered great vocals and engaged the crowd with conversation (all while drinking straight from a bottle of red wine and chain smoking cigarettes, as are his trademarks.) The group played every song off their album, along with many from the Deluxe Edition.
When passersby would ask who the huge outside of the venue was for and we told them, all we would get was blank faces staring back at us. But once we were inside the venue, the sold-out crowd knew every word to every song. And with more US tour dates just announced for the fall, this band will definitely keep gaining popularity. I am so so excited to get to see them again in about a week at the Isle of Wight festival in England, and possibly again in Portugal in mid-July! But I’m definitely grateful I got to see them here in the US (where they’re not as big), and in a smaller venue with a great veiw, before they start playing bigger shows.

And here, have my crappy iphone videos of 2 of my favorite songs:
