Marvelous Markets, pt. 2: Fort Greene Flea
I foam at the mouth at any mention of markets. Farmer’s markets, flea markets, I love it all. Cheap flea markets are my happy place. So of course, I had to find one during my last trip to New York City.
After doing some research I decided that I had to check out the Fort Greene Flea Market in Brooklyn, which houses over 150 vendors every Saturday. It seemed like one of the best and most authentic market options in New York/Brooklyn. And I had the best time there!
I am a firm believer in “One Man’s Trash is Another Man’s Treasure.” So I made the trek from Manhattan to the Boerum Hill area of Brooklyn with a good feeling. The market’s website boasts that the school lot is transformed into “part vintage bazaar, part hipster hang, part old-fashioned town square, and part food bonanza.”
And that is absolutely accurate. There are over 150 vendors. Everything from food, fine vintage jewelry, handmade crafts, furniture, and stuff people are trying to get rid of.
The people there, both buying and selling, range from hipster couples with small children, old ladies in their muumuus, hoity-toity vintage collectors, and some of the weirdest-dressed college kids I have ever seen.
Although it was a little intimidating upon arrival to see nothing but rows and rows of vendors and what some people might call “junk,” I knew I was going to be able to find some amazing things here. So I held my breath and dove right in. And sure enough, I surfaced a couple of hours later with my hands full. For a while I was lost in the maze of vendor booths not sure if I would ever surface. But also not sure if I even wanted to.
I walked out with a Byrds vinyl, some dip dyed jean shorts, and 2 necklace, with nothing costing over $20!
