Marvelous Markets, pt. 1: Borough Market – London
Do you love London? Do you love farmer’s markets? Do you love food? I’ll answer all of these for you: YES. Well, those happen to be 3 of my favorite things. Although I haven’t posted too much about it (because I honestly don’t even know where to begin) I’m OBSESSED with London. Plus I LOVE markets of all kind – whether that be food, produce, secondhand, flea, etc. And, obviously, this gal loves to eat too! And I’m really good at it. #moretolove
One of the (many) reasons London my favorite city is because it has TONS of markets. I haven’t been to all of them yet, but I have absolutely LOVED the ones I have been to! And one of the best London markets I’ve been to is Borough Market.
Anyone who has been to London or has a general knowledge of its top tourist spots knows about Borough Market. It’s a well-known attraction. It has both International and British specialties, and is London’s most well-known food market. I have visited this market twice out of my 3 visits to London. Both times, I found a buzzing atmosphere, beautiful food displays, and soooo many delicious options to choose from, most of which were pretty affordable (by London’s standards).
Since I’m pretty sure I am THE most indecisive person on planet earth, the majority of my time here was spent wandering past all the booths trying to decide what to order. Did I want some Ethiopian stirfry? Some Spanish paella? OR some Thai mango and coconut sticky rice? HOW DOES ONE CHOOSE? I wandered through the rows of booths. From the outside, I looked relaxed and casual. But internally, I was fighting battles with myself over what the heck to get!
Dramatic, right?
But it was as if it was the most important decision I would ever make in my life (as every decision is for me). Some booths even had free samples, where I would proceed to try the food, chat with the booth owner about how good it was, but then walk away awkwardly without buying anything because I STILL wasn’t sure what I wanted.
I still never really even decided on anything, persay. My friends and I basically arranged it so that we all just got something different and then tried each other’s food. I really couldn’t even tell you what we got. But I can tell you that it was all DELICIOUS. The market had a beautiful area to sit and eat your newly-purchased goodies. It was a semi-sunny day, and the room was full of windows that let the light stream in beautifully. I loved getting to people watch whilst eating my delicious, various worldly foods.
If you’re in London and are looking for a great spot to grab a bite, head over to Borough Market! I promise you won’t be disappointed in the offerings. You’ll love the friendly staff. You’ll find a great atmosphere to enjoy lunch.
Sure, its pretty packed on the weekends. But if you’re like me and love hustle and bustle (or even if you’re not), you must visit! I cannot even describe the amazing sensations my nose was experiencing from all the different smells coming from the different vendors. I seriously wanted to buy something from every single booth. Seriously.
Borough Market is open Wednesday & Thursday from 10 am to 5 pm, Fridays from 10 am to 6 pm, and Saturdays from 8 am to 5 pm. On Monday and Tuesday, it just offers lunch, from 10 am to 5 pm.
It’s located right off the southern end of the London Bridge, If you’re taking the Tube, just take the Jubilee or Northern Lines to the London Bridge Station and follow the signs for Borough High Street. Or even better, walk there across the London Bridge and get some amazing views of the famous Tower Bridge on your way.
As you may have guessed from the title of this post, I will be sharing stories from other markets I’ve visited. So stay tuned for more Marvelous Markets! I’ll be featuring markets I’ve been to everywhere from Portugal to NYC to Spain to Italy, and of course, even more in London!
